The Haiti Earthquake Relief (Busking)

What are going we doing for the Haiti earthquake?

The Haiti earthquake occurred recently on the 12th of January 2010 where the magnitude of the earthquake was 7.0 on the Richter scale. Gaining some knowledge about the earthquake previously from Geography, I understand that this earthquake is massively destructive! This tragic event resulted in our school to react and respond to the situation. What our school decided as a community is to raise money to donate through varies of small events such are the busking and bake sale. I will be taking part in the busking during the lunch hour, singing.

What are my plans in contributing to the fundraising?

However, before I actually sing, I have to plan a few things. Therefore, I am hoping to perform two songs with two other students in my school who plays the piano and the acoustic guitar. I need to go and speak to them about the event and how we are going to perform in front of many people who may well donate money for Haiti. Myself and the other students will have to schedule ourselves for practice sessions during either lunch hours or after school hours in getting ready for the performance...

My personal goals which I would like to achieve?

Personally, through the performance I would like to become more knowledgeable about the world around me and in this cause about Haiti's earthquake. I am going to do some background research on the internet and watch the news which will hopefully contribute to my knowledge of the event which occurred. Also, through this small event I hope to become more of a caring person. Therefore, to have empathy towards different issues which occur around the world today and respond to them with respect.

My thoughts on the day of the performance...

The team consisted of myself, a pianist and a guitarist where I sang two songs: the first song is called 'Hurt' by Christina Aguilera and the second song is called 'I'll Stand by You' by the Pretenders. In my opinion, I felt like the performance went by really fast even though we practiced for longer. It was worth it! Many students, teachers and others gathered in watching the performance. Some donated us money which will contribute to the Haiti's earthquake relief. Overall I believed it was successful our performance and I would love to perform again in the future for a cause.

Did I achieve what I originally planned?

Through preparing for the performance and actually performing the songs, I believe I have developed myself personally further as an individual. Firstly, through researching and understanding the Haiti earthquake better through the media such as the news, I have became significantly open-minded about the world which I live in. Moreover, one a my aims in participating in this small event is become more knowledgeable and empathetic about different causes. I have gained these, however I believe that in the future I can earn more of these factors through organising and planning my own fundraising which I am passionate about, such as animal-rights. Through the Haiti's earthquake relief, I was able to work collaboratively with others in my band. This is evidence through the practice hours we put in before the initial performance. Also, I've managed to engage in an issue of global importance with a wider knowledge. Thus, this knowledge can be applied later on in my life in tackling other important causes.
