Pattaya Players Halloween Fair for Children 2009

At one of the children's game booths

On Halloween night of the 31st, October a bunch of Year 12s volunteered to help out with the Halloween fair which was held in Horse Shoe Point. I wanted to experience the sense of taking care and being as helpful at possible towards children and also their parents. This was a family event therefore there were individuals from many age groups. Before arriving in Horse Shoe Point, I feared a bit of the responsibilities I'll have to overcome during my working shift. I wanted to perform may best at nurturing and caring towards children and their parents. Firstly, Celine (our supervisor who was in charged) assigned me to work at the 'Pony Ride' booth. Personally horses and ponies are not my favorite due to the past of me riding them. I was desperate to change booths, maybe into something in which my friends were participating in. However the experience taught me to be independent even though you may dislike a situation you are in. The pony booth was a success, a line of children and their parents swarmed the area I was working in. The activity had taught me to work well with others, in this case my partner who even though we're from the same school, I hardly have kept in contact with him. Therefore this event was a chance for me personally to bond with people from the same year group as me. During my working period, I had to frequently take charge of situations asking parents which pony would their child prefer, little things which would put a smile on someones face. Also since one of the languages I speak is Thai, I had to do translations due to language boundaries between foreigners and the Thai pony keepers. Even though it was nerve ranking in my opinion talking to parents, I've overcome the sense. This event truly boosed my confidence levels up. It made me smile when a parent said 'thank you' due to the efforts I've put in. Even a small simple phrase can make yourself proud. This event had taught me to take charge of myself, to become independent even though a situation may be frightening. In the near future, I would love to take part again in this type of activity. I want to challenge myself in taking the role of a leader.
