Myself, Valerie and Francis getting ready to sing...
The Soul Band is a collection of musicians in school and the members also include teachers as well. The band is not large. We often rehearse every Wednesday lunch times for events such as the Christmas concert, Summer concert, special gigs and celebrations. Personally, I've been a part of the soul band for a very long time already, however I like to challenge myself. Even though before the soul band focused on 'soul' types of music e.g. Aretha Franklin - Respect, ironically now we introduced the Beatles into out collection of songs which in a sense changing the mood of the 'soul band'. I like the idea however, as it is a change to what I've done in the past.
What are may initial aims which I wanted to achieve when I first joined?
The reason I initially joined the Soul Band was because firstly singing is my passion and I wanted to challenge myself further in singing different styles of music as well as seeing myself grow as a motivated individual. I believe that through the Soul Band and also practicing singing and music at home, I will enhance myself to become an inquirer. An inquirer often loves to research things by themselves and also tries to learn and develop skills which I wanted to become. I am passionate about music and therefore often I practice through the internet for my own benefit as well as for the soul band's.
My comments on the experience...
The experience of taking part in different events with the Soul Band is tremendous, from the Senior Formal to singing for the International Day held in school which is evidenced from the photograph above. I am able to make friends from different year groups as they are also the Soul Band member and we are able to share experiences together. It has given me the opportunity to challenge my singing abilities which I would like to further develop when I am in university.
Did I achieve what I seek for initially?
What I believe I've gained from being in the Soul Band is that similar to a team-sport, by working as a group collaboratively you can succeed. The Soul Band wouldn't be a Soul band without everyone in it. From a back-up singer to now one of the lead singers in the Soul Band, I believe that I've truly increased my awareness of my strengths as well as my weaknesses. Therefore, this has contributed to my growth as an individual being. Moreover, I believe that I have shown a commitment to the activity. This is evidenced as I go to lunch time practices every Wednesdays instead of having a lunch break.
