Working on Registration (for RSIC 'We Walk Together')

The morning registration (the arrival of the delegates)

What was my role in contributing to the registration?

My role in contributing to the registration for the conference was to welcome delegates, help the teachers as an assistant in the registration process and also working at the information table with some of the parents.

Why is this a Service activity?

All delegates, teachers and governors are our visitors in the conference. They all come from all over the globe, therefore as a host school we want all of them to feel comfortable and have a good impression of our school. Therefore, we give the visitors a helping hand if they need anything and help them get settled in. In a sense this is Service as you are willing to give up your time without benefits in helping out the visitors. Therefore, overall volunteering for the conference.

What are my personal aims which I would like to gain from the session?

I would only be working in the registration process for approximately 5 hours therefore what I plan to achieve isn't a lot. However, through hosting the visitors and helping the teachers with the registration, I would like to become principled in respecting and helping out different individuals. Moreover, through the registration process I would like to significantly become a better communicator as I will have to talk and sort out situations in maybe more than one language. This include mainly English and also Thai which I am fluent at.

The experience of working in registration and helping out the guests...

In my opinion, it was fun :) as I met so many new faces and it was good to speak to different individuals from many countries. Moreover, I believe that the hard part of registration is that at some point I had to solve problems fairly quickly as I didn't want the visitors to wait for a long time. Also, I spoke a lot in introducing the visitors in our school as well as making everyone feel comfortable. At the information desk where I worked at at one point, I had to collect in art works from different schools for the exhibition as well as answering questions which the visitors asked. It felt good to help different individuals because at one point I had to go and get a phone card for one of the ladies. Overall, I was quite tiring as you had to run around a lot, mainly in a rush but it was worth it.

Did I gain anything valuable out of the session?

Personally, I thought that the registration process gave me a new experience which I've never experienced before. Significantly, I've under taken a new challenge in helping the visitors to settle in. I've never been in the situation before in my life where you are on demand and have to rush around in helping and answering questions which may have come up. Moreover, I believe that I've become a better communication and problem solver in tackling issues and helping out the visitors.
